Baby Boomers would not exist in any great numbers had it not been for the sacrifices of their Parents’ Generation, of which so many laid down their lives n the cause of freedom during WW2. Generation X and the current generation are pretty much oblivious to what went before and what it is that enables them to have the life that they enjoy today.

To be fair, while the modern world sucks us all in with ever increasing intensity, we do have to concentrate on surviving and making a living each and every day and not dwell forever on the past. But to get through the present with some degree of certainty we do need to understand the trials of the past.

I remember my Mother complaining that Dad always talked about the War incessantly given half a chance and that, years after they had been divorced. The realisation that I might not have been able to sit in front of my PC as I do now and communicate my thoughts to the world, had it not been for the ultimate sacrifices by so many millions, has had a huge effect on me. Has it had an effect on You?

It’s important to know where you came from, who your Parents and Relatives were and what marks they made on the World. Taking some time to uncover Family History can be both rewarding and disturbing. Certainly you’ll bring to light important occurrences and landmark moments, that when examined, will tell you who you really are.

Keeping a record, by way of autobiography can be a very important task for the enlightenment of future generations. As an adult, if you are able to sift through the events of your family history, via an autobiography you’ll not only discover previously unknown facts but will begin to understand why things turned out the way they did.

If perhaps you are bitter and confused about the cards life dealt you, understanding the background to events and the emotions they exposed you’ll be able to forgive or rejoice or maybe even both!

It may seem obvious to most of you that placating the Google Spider and all that surrounds its web is all that you have to worry about when launching or building your Business on the Web.

To a significant degree this is true but the Mighty Search Engine GoogleSan didn’t invent the Internet, didn’t create the World and can’t prevent Earthquakes! It creates quite a few Earthquakes of its own though which are pre-planned and like many Earthquakes, are precursors to Tsunamis.

The Tsunamis I am talking about here are not the kind that lead to Death and incalculable Human Misery (although some Marketers on the Internet would disagree) but to the wholesale banishing of worthless websites.

Google is smarter than most Marketers and those that try to game the system will inevitably be found out and vanish into oblivion. Spammy Adsense only sites with spun articles that make little sense to the average human are destined to be deleted sooner rather than later!

Web sites that get little attention over a significant period are also likely to drop off the Google radar as I’ve found out recently with my own Learning to Drive website after a long lay off.

I think it’s universally agreed that good intelligent and relevant content will ensure that your site at least doesn’t get blacklisted and will rise in the rankings given time and effort on the authors’ part.

Building Your Web Site with a Sound Foundation and Infrastructure will enable it to last for Longer than Most Quick Buck Creations!

Of course the infrastructure of your site is the foundation upon which you can build your business. The content is what will see you successful providing you have learned to relate to your audience and provide suitable value.

Great stores of knowledge or expertise within individuals are worthless if they cannot be shared for the common good. One aspect of Marketing that appears to be gaining momentum on the Web is for experts to freely share some of their expertise  with their visitors or subscribers. Free is good I think you would agree!

Of course other Marketers despise and villify so called Freebie Seekers and that’s their prerogative. My own view is that the best way to build trust and ultimately gain disciples and customers or clients is to show what you are made of first before launching  your ” Here’s some stuff you might want to look at before the Price goes up” crusade.

The Fukushima Engineers are  giving their “stuff” away for free,while others count the cost elsewhere.  They  may even end up giving their lives so that others can benefit from their Expertise and Focus.

Think about what you can do to help others without counting the cost!

Just a few minutes ago 16/03/2011 and nearly a week after the Catastrophe that has reduced Japan to a shadow of its former self, I watched a Sky News broadcast and felt compelled to give my Take on the Quake and the unfolding events at Fukushima!

As a Paid –Up Boomer (you can read into that what you will!) it’s natural that I would be perhaps more aware of the first Nuclear Catastrophe that the USA dumped on Japan in 1945, than my two Daughters who are several generations on from that conflict.

Actually I’m sure that there will be people out there that will say “he’s not really a Boomer coz he was born just a few months short of the Official Boomer Start –up date of Jan 1 1946”. They are entitled to their opinion!

 Yes it’s true I was still two months from seeing the light of day when the horrors of the Atomic Bomb were inflicted on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ushering in the Nuclear age and arguably the start of the downward spiral of Human Annihilation.

Seeing the footage of the aftermath of Hiroshima many times over in the coming years (as an Adult), it was clearly a demonstration of the awesome power of Nuclear Fission and the miseries it brought.

Japan was brought to its knees and sued for peace almost immediately. Those images of shadows on concrete that had been Human beings, vaporised in an instant, left a strange sickly taste in my mouth which has surfaced many times since, when being exposed to War footage.

To the present:- Japan has atoned for all the horrors it inflicted during World War Two and has become the third largest Economy on Earth with a display of technical  magnificence underpinned by a work culture and pursuit of excellence that we should all admire and endeavour to emulate.

That Japan should be exposed to yet another Nuclear Nightmare, this time, by a force far greater than anything Man could ever develop, is heartbreaking.

Japan did not deserve this cruel blow that has seen whole towns and villages swept away with the death toll still rising. In catastrophes like this it’s probable that the actual death toll, when all is said and done, will never be known.

 The Earthquake producing Tsunami is a fact of life. A fact of life that anyone  living on the Ring of Fire is aware of. The magnitude of an earthquake is something that is indeterminate. The extent of damage and devastation that follows a Mega Quake is something that the whole World now needs to take seriously. Damage limitation procedures should now be top of every countries ” Must Do List”

The Japanese are a Stoical Nation, with a great culture and work ethic, which has got them where they were up until last week! They will rebuild their Nation, while continuing to mourn the loss of so many innocent lives. It’s what they do well!

The economic impact on the rest of the world has yet to be realised, but for sure the ‘Quake and Tsunami will have a significant impact far far away from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant for months and years to come.

Please take a moment to reflect on the suffering that is being endured and born bravely while realising how lucky you are personally not to have to experience this at first hand!

Everybody knows that  Internet  reach and particularly that of Marketers
 touting their push button, biz-in-a box, millionaire in one month, are expanding exponentially. Of course everyone has a right to create an Internet presence and attempt to build a sustainable business in these uncertain and troubled times. What many of these so called Marketers (I prefer to call them leeches!) don’t have a right to do is to plague their subscribers with up to sometimes three e mails a day…Yes a Day! Not a Week… a Day!

Yeah yeah I know it’s a well published cliché that it takes a web visitor up to seven times to make up his or her mind that the author is worth listening to. Perhaps even to purchase some stuff. Any marketer who bombards a subscriber with this amount of b-shit really doesn’t deserve to be on this Planet much less on the Internet!

There are a number of disturbing trends that I have noticed over the last year while wading through my in box and struggling with my Click-Here Syndrome!

(1) When someone does decide to purchase a product on line they are then put through as many as three further hoops for one time offers (OTO’S). For those of you who are not used to this it is totally confusing if not annoying!

(2) If you actually dare to try and leave the page without purchasing it is quite common to be put through another three pop- ups offering further discounts and often verbiage that verges on abuse. Offers to talk to a live operator to show you the error of your ways in not purchasing is also prevalent.

(3) Another trend is to put an anonymous word in the Senders Box, such as support; followed by more outrageous claims in the Subject Box of the email. You haven’t a clue who the message is from and it sparks curiosity to click, if you’re anything like me. I hasten to add and this is the purpose of this article, that you absolutely will have to be ruthless in the future with e mail subscriptions!

(4) Another marginally (but only just!) tactic is to put an enticing Free Offer in the Subject Box of your e mail and having clicked on this you are asked to submit your already wilting e mail address into another Marketers sign -up box to see what is going on. Personally I don’t mind being notified of a really good offer from a really exceptional Author, but I would rather know more about who I am signing up to before I click and get exposed to yet more Bull-S—T.

This level of secrecy and subterfuge is unacceptable to me and in the future (I mean right now) I am about to purge my subscriptions down to the bare minimum of people I know and respect and from whom I have previously bought!

One Marketer, who is not only a decent Guy but who has helped countless thousands in his 15 year career as a noted expert (he doesn’t like the word Guru …and I thoroughly agree with him) is Jim Edwards (of seven day e book .com fame) I shall never, but never unsubscribe from this truly inspirational Man and I suggest that you take a long hard look at your list of subscriptions and select a mere handful and delete all the rest.

 Jim incidentally, who has an uncanny knack of predicting major trends in Marketing on the Internet once said (and I am sure he still does) that you should follow one expert (having assessed his or her capability) and don’t bother with anyone else.

 It’s a physical impossibility to even read all the stuff that is coming through your inbox if you’re subscribed to more than a handful of Website Owners let alone take any action on what they have to say. How am I so sure of this? Well that would be telling wouldn’t it?

I wish I had listened to Jim Edwards more carefully in the past because I am now faced with a monumental task to delete dozens of subscriptions as well as having to take 6 weeks a year in a Sanitarium to overcome my Click- Here addiction and Information Overload.

Yes we all know the favourite mantra of failed writers…Writers Block Actually it’s one of the easiest hurdles to overcome as a writer if you’ll just stop whingeing, sit down at your keyboard and recall your earliest childhood memories.

Once you are motoring the thoughts that will become a torrent should spawn plenty of fresh ideas which you can then adapt to the task in hand whatever you are endeavoring to write about.

It’s all about triggers when you think about it. You have got to get started and once started your thought processes will trigger other thoughts and ideas and before you can utter those brain crushing words Writers Bl… you’re writing like an Express Train!

Clearly if you set yourself up with a “Must Write some Stuff every Morning” mantra, before the day gets under way, you’ll rarely ever have a writing problem again. The ideas will fill your brain and there won’t be enough hours in the day to get them all on paper, or the Hard Drive as the case may be!
So all of you Boomers out there who pretend that you can’t write, get off your aging Butts and get cracking .

This has got to be the most important habit for you if you are to ever create a Web presence and get a Web site under way. For sure there’s a shed load of content that you can beg or borrow out there on the Web but your own personally crafted words will have much more inpact and reach.

Ok so you have finally gotten round to the realisation that this Internet thing ain’t going away any time soon and that you absolutely must hire a Webmaster to get your idea up and running.

I mean who could possibly set up a Web site,with all that Techie stuff and jargon floating around,only a certified Webmaster Geek person? Thats what they do! Set up Web Sites for the tide of Boomers who know they need a website but haven’t a clue where to start.

Shall we repeat? or better still Rinse and Repeat! You hear this a lot in marketing spiels. Do it once and then do it over and over again. It’s not a bad strategy if you can get past the first excruciating anguish of that first Web Site. Without a Certified Geek Web person to do it all for you,you’ll be collecting your pension before it’s done.
Wrong!

It might have been the case 10 years ago before the advent of WordPress,but not anymore! With some good tutorials and plenty of Java in stock it should be possible for even the most Technophobic of Boomers to get themselves one of those fancy web site thingies up and running in a day or two.

No we are not promoting the new wave of Set it Up in only 15 minutes. That’s just not possible until you have done it at least 10 times and even then navigating your Domain Name Registrar could take that amount of time alone!

We’ll continue the Theme of becoming your own Webmaster and controlling your own destiny in further posts so stay tuned all you Non Techie Boomers as all will be revealed.

Technophobia isn’t just an excuse for lack of effort or application.Sometimes there are other hidden factors that turn an otherwise techically competent Boomer into a quiverring train wreck.

One of the best ways to turn yourself into the laughing stock of your kids is to forever repeat your mantra “I just can’t seem to figure it all out”.Normally this gets you off the hook with despairing glances and sighs when in company.
Take a minute to think about the messages you are sending to your subconcious and youi’ll realise that every time you admit defeat you are getting further and further away from ever solving the problemn of your ineptitude.

Having made a clinical trial of this whole issue of Technophobia myself (well actually no…I decided it was just too damn difficult!) I came to the conclusion that it was purely a time availability issue.

If something takes four hours to fugure out and you have only two at your disposal then you have a big problem. If you’re a procrastinator as well (part of the same Genus) then you have a REALLY big problem.
Almost every piece of new kit that has come my way in the last 10 years there has been a problem with.
Be it wire free phones, printers, sony walkmans and so on…the list is endless. How could it be that an otherwise mentally competent and enthusiastic devourer of new Technology have so much difficulty in getting anything to work adequately.
Oh yes I forgot the state of the art Laptop which was to solve all my problems of online activity.That’s a really crazy story which I’ll tell you some time,when I have time, which incidentally is in short supply when you are a BOOMER.
Time waits for no man if even you get down on your knees and pray for a 36 hour day.Trust me I’ve tried this and it doesn’t work perhaps there is a technical solution to this lengthening of a day to get more done.
I am working on this and you’ll get the results when they are analysed.I wonder can it be possible to install Google Analytics into a Human Brain?

Being a boomer has many facets one of which is, hopefully the ability to poke fun at oneself, if you are so inclined.

Of course if you are a really serious Boomer then this might come with some difficulty; indeed with pain, anguish and the proverbial gnashing of teeth!

We (I mean I) here at Baby Boomer Marketing have been serious all my life and for the last few years have been leaving the serious side behind a little (sometimes a lot!) in an attempt to eke out another few more years on this planet.

Is it working you might well ask?

Well I have tried the “Sitting at the Computer in your Underwear” thing since this is supposed to be what all successful Marketers would have you believe is the way to go if you want to make money, or live longer or spend your life on a beach! We’ve even had a go at growing Roses!

As to making money online well that takes time and time is in fast reducing supply if you are an AGING Boomer. If you are a younger Boomer then you probably have a little more time to get a handle on this whole Internet, WordPress Blogtastic Universe.

Now here’s a little tip… if you are a Closet Writer and have been telling everyone for the last 39 years that you are about to write a book, or heaven forbid, have even started one, then a WordPress Blog , like the one you are reading now(and we hope you are) will suit you down to the ground.

Of course I have just committed one of the cardinal sins of writing for the web by creating a book sized sentence. But hey this is my Blog and I’ll jolly well write how I like(but you shouldn’t!)

Yes people the discovery of WordPress and all it’s various and wonderfully diverse navigation, not to mention Plug-Ins and Spam will turn you into a Writer before you can say “But I hate Computers”
You’ll have to follow my other three readers (and fans !) here for the ongoing saga and tutorials that will lead you to WordPress Heaven .

Gotta Go now and turn the Pasta off or I’ll burn the kitchen down which woudn’t be a bad thing actually since I own the kitchen from Hell on Steroids. If you’re very good I’ll put up a pic of this monstrosity on another occasion when I ‘m bored with cranking out Tutorials

Once again this morning while doing my usual Keyword detective work on Google I came across a very large Automotive site with a substantial Facebook presence that was publishing one of my first articles from 2005 without the required Author Accreditation.
I left them a comment but probably won’t get a reply.

Interestingly, I then checked out their Facebook page and their About Bio tells us that they are not Natural English speakers and that they belong to the long list of Copyright Pirates that plague the Web. I’ll be following up avenues with the sites that they have a presence on in due course.
You might like to see their pitiful attempt at the English Language.

Becoming a Giant Squid at Seth Godin’s site http://squidoo.com may take a little while and and a shed load of content but it’ll be worth it.
You may be asking how do I know? Well as a Newbie Squidlet with just a few Lenses to my Cave I can only surmise that this could be the case.

This is a terrific site for easy uploading of content to your Lens(or page) and any description here would not do it justice so head on over to the Squid Tank and see for yourself.

I warn you people that you could find it addictive, pretty much on the same lines as anything to do with Social Media. But the more exposure you have to your ideas and thoughts across the Web the more authority you will garner. The links and an increase in Visitors to your Blog or main site certainly won’t do you any harm either.

We’ve been messing around with Blogs(mostly free hosted) and our main web site for Learner Drivers for a number of years so it’s time to get serious and not only chart the progress but give some hopefully valuable advice to those of you starting out.

Any thing new in Life is usually not so easy and often full of disappointments. Getting to grips with a new Blog and turning it into something of value to visitors is not an overnight exercise.

We’ve been mostly absent from this blog since it was set up due to Domestic distractions so it is a work in progress.If you have any pressing questions (and who hasn’t ?) we’d love to here from you.

A Guide for Newbies to get under the Radar of the ever increasing mountain of technophobia that faces a Web site owner starting off.

There is of course a huge amount to learn in setting up and running a Web Site, which is why, I believe, that most newcomers tend to put their trust in a web designer, aka webmaster and leave them to get on with things hoping that all will go well. Big Mistake!

It’s only when, having spent quite a lot of money, you find out that your pride and joy is not giving you the results that you imagined, that alarm bells can start to ring. In my own case this took approximately four years to sink in. After a promising start, with some enquiries from the other side of the world, things not only didn’t get any better but got worse!

Of course, if you are running and developing a new business, which takes a colossal amount of time and commitment, you don’t initially have time to worry too much about the success of your web site. After all, a web site will make you a zillionaire quicker than you can spell the long version of SEO! Big Mistake!

I believe it is just as important to designate sufficient time to understanding how a web site is developed, promoted and maintained as it is to spend time on all the other many facets of a fledgling business.

Many new business owners, myself included, thought in the past that just by having a web site and on-line presence AND a webmaster, that everything would be fine. Visitors and sales would surely follow and increase exponentially. Not So!

Probably the pace of change on-line is more rapid than most businesses realise and therefore if you are going to build a site AND do some reasonable level of commerce from it, you have got to study and learn a number of basics.

1. Key word research should really begin before you set about building your site, because it can help with the choice of a suitable Domain name and continue to assist in the titles and scope of your eventual articles.

2. Original and fresh content related to your prospective field is a necessity, and needs to be uploaded on a very regular basis. Unless you are a very large company with an in-house webmaster, this is probably the most crucial aspect of developing a site in terms of getting good search engine results.

3. Writing new pages can be extremely time consuming and unless you have a suitable S.M.S. package installed, enabling you to become your own webmaster, it’s highly likely you will commence the slow but inexorable slide to oblivion, other wise known as Zero traffic.

4. Build your site by all means but make sure that you become your own webmaster, having taken a crash course in the do’s and don’ts. You absolutely must have the facility to control what goes on within your site. If you miss out on this vital aspect of developing a site, the chances are that you will lose interest and stop creating ideas and content.

5. Learning to write your content, even if this seems a bit beyond your reach to begin with is another essential skill to be fine tuned and believe me, once you have got under way it will become easier with each passing day. Looking at how other web sites operate and the standard of their content will help you along the path.

6. Articles on your area of expertise, submitted to a number of reputable Directories, will almost immediately get you noticed and start to build credibility. These can be modified for use as web pages and will provide ideas for new content on a never ending basis. It has been my experience in the recent past that articles can have a very advantageous effect on search engine results. Credibility is something you can never have too much of.

7. Search engine optimization, a very fancy term, with nearly as many, so called, experts as there are sites on the Web and similar in number to the droves of Web site designers! This is a thorny topic and one best left to the experts, for the behind the scenes work. However, it is my belief that the best results come from fresh and original content put up on your site on a regular basis. Results from my blog of only two months existence, in terms of link popularity, are outstripping my web site that has been on-line for five years. This is all down to regular articles on my chosen topic.

8. A newsletter or ezine, is a very good way of encouraging traffic to your site and building your subscriber list that you can eventually turn into clients, customers and sales. Offering an incentive for your visitors to part with their e-mail address can be by way of a free mini course or e book.. In the case of your newly published E-Book, offering a free download of one complete chapter is something worth considering and is a very popular technique. This is all part of the credibility building process. Once you get used to making regular posts to your newly set up Blog, a newsletter should be relatively easy to produce, without too much stress.

9. A Business Blog is I think, the way forward, for many web site owners who would like to see an increase in traffic of a targeted nature. They are easy to set up and have the advantage of being virtually instant. One of the great things that can help you in becoming more adept as a webmaster, utilising your own blog, is that learning the rudiments of html is not the nightmare that it may appear to be. You can practise away to your heart’s content adding and subtracting code from a blog post and see immediately the result in the preview pane. You don’t even need to publish this post. Again, getting used to viewing the source code of other web sites and seeing how they do things will give you no end of inspiration.

10. Control is the key to success in developing your skill as a webmaster. In a follow–up article on the experiences of a complete Blog novice we will have a look at some of the more interesting facts, figures, and activities that will take you where you want to go, and contribute to the success of your web site, providing you are prepared to allocate sufficient computer timeand are not expecting to retire a millionaire in six months!

It is, however, an achievable goal to go from Meek to Geek in just a couple of weeks, with a little effort! (well maybe  a couple of months on second   thoughts!)
